In 2006, Railtown aquired a 60-ton Baldwin Whitcomb diesel locomotive donated from the Riverbank Army Ammunition Plant .  Volunteer Stan Eggink is reassembling the auxilary exciter-generator so it can be put into operation as our backup diesel.  This locomotive was originally built in 1953, but was upgraded with a new caterpillar engine in 1994.

Late last week, we received shipment of the steel for the fabrication of a new centerplate for the Sierra #2 (Shay).  Our wonderful machinist, Bob West, has been machining the replacement, which will then be welded to the steel casting.  Then we’ll be ready for the challenge of installation.  It’s a heavy part, and as Railroad Restoration Leadworker, George Sapp says “gravity helped us remove it”.  We’ll be making regular postings to follow that progress.
