Fitting Pipes

In the restoration of the Sierra #3, we are using the existing wye pipe, with a new dry pipe.  The dry pipe is the part that conveys the steam from the throttle in the steam dome to the wye (distribution pipes) in the smoke box.  It is important that the flange of wye pipe fit perfectly into the dry pipe.  To ensure this fit, it has been necessary to polish the surfaces of the two parts, using an abrasive lapping compound, and old-fashioned elbow grease.
