Memorial Day Weekend at Railtown

Memorial Day weekend is a great time to visit Railtown!  Our expansive green lawn, under the shade of giant oaks, is a great place to enjoy a picnic, let the kids run around, and just relax.  While you are here, you can wander the grounds and look at the historic cars and locomotives, and of course, tour the roundhouse.
Shay No. 2 on the turntable

On Saturday and Sunday, we’ll be running the “Sidewinder Express” our Shay No. 2.  If you look at our past blog entries, you’ll note that we spend a lot of time maintaining and reparing this unique locomotive.  In fact, we are preparing to take it out of service for a few weeks in order to complete some minor repairs, so this may be the last time to see it in action for a while.
While you are here, take time to see the turntable in use– every day when we bring the steam locomotives out, and put them away, the pass through the turntable.  Its one of the unique  features of this historic site that the public has an up-close view as the crew readies and fuels the locomotive.  The best time to catch this is between 9:30-10:00, and immediately after the last train of the day (around 4:00 PM).
On Monday, we’ll be running our ex-Army Diesel, (the crew calls this locomotive “Rosebud”).  Along with the diesel, we will also be using our newly restored Caboose No. 7.  Be sure to ask for a ticket, and ride in the cupola for the best view!  If you are a member, you can ride once in the open car, and again in the caboose if you have the time!  (If you aren’t a member, you might want to consider it for free rides all year).
See you soon, and don’t forget to see us on  facebook.
